Chikmagalur vs Coorg Coffee

Two of Karnataka's most celebrated coffee-growing regions, compared.

Chikmagalur and Coorg (Kodagu) are both nestled in the Western Ghats of Karnataka and are among India's most recognized coffee-growing regions. While they share a climate suited to shade-grown coffee, each has its own character shaped by altitude, terrain, and estate traditions.

Chikmagalur

Often called the birthplace of coffee cultivation in India, Chikmagalur sits at higher average elevations, which favors Arabica cultivation. Its estates are known for shade-grown practices under native tree canopies, producing beans with a comparatively mild, aromatic profile.

Coorg (Kodagu)

Coorg grows both Arabica and a considerable amount of Robusta, often intercropped with pepper and other spices on the same estates. This mixed cultivation, along with the region's heavier rainfall, tends to produce coffee with a fuller body — a profile well suited to blends that need more strength.

Which Should You Choose?

If you prefer a milder, more aromatic cup, Chikmagalur-grown Arabica tends to fit that profile. If you're after a fuller-bodied blend — especially for filter coffee with chicory — Coorg's Robusta-leaning coffee is a strong option. Many South Indian blends actually combine beans from both regions to balance aroma and strength.
